Granite

Granite is a natural stone that is mined in quarries worldwide. Granite comes in a large variety of colors and movements. Being natural, each slab will have its own unique look.

Granite is a scratch and heat resistant material. With proper maintenance, it is also stain resistant.

Granite is a porous material, meaning that liquids are able to penetrate it. Left unsealed, a granite countertop may stain or become a habitat for bacteria and mold.

How does granite compare to other materials?

  • Being a natural stone, granite is available in a larger variety than quartz.
  • Granite is more durable that marble, but less durable than quartz.
  • Granite is better at resisting stains than marble.
  • Granite needs periodic sealing to resist stains, whereas quartz does not.
  • Unlike quartz, granite is suitable to be used outdoors.

Care

Unsealed, granite can be stained by oil, wine, fruit juices, and other liquids. By sealing your granite surface, these substances won't be as likely able to penetrate into the stone.

The Yard carries MORE Stone Sealer, which will seal your surface for up to 8 years. Sealing takes between 30 - 60 minutes and costs $30 - $50 depending on surface size. You can read the manufacturer's instructions here.
